Position Description: Chair of the Epidemiology Department
The College of Global Public Health (GPH) at New York University (NYU) is seeking applications for the position of Chair of the Epidemiology Department. GPH seeks an exceptional scholar and administrator to lead the Department and build its innovative academic and research enterprise based in New York City and extending throughout NYU’s extensive Global Network University (GNU) campuses and study-away sites.
The College of Global Public Health
GPH is preparing for the next generation of public health pioneers with the critical thinking skills, acumen and entrepreneurial approaches necessary to reinvent the public health paradigm. The college is devoted to employing a non-traditional, interdisciplinary model. GPH aims to improve health worldwide through a unique blend of global public health studies, research and practice. While NYU has granted degrees in public health for over 40 years, on June 8, 2015, the Board of Trustees of NYU approved the formation of our new College of Global Public Health. GPH became fully accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health in June 2019.
GPH offers an undergraduate joint-major program collaborating with 10 majors at other NYU schools. GPH offers the Master of Public Health degree in one of ten concentrations, including the full-time, one-year Cross-Continental MPH program and the MPH in Epidemiology. Doctoral students at GPH receive training in one of three PhD concentration areas, including Epidemiology. The College benefits from collaborations with NYU’s other renowned schools and colleges, fostering a unique interdisciplinary approach to address the most pressing global health challenges. Academics at GPH encompass some of the leading disciplines in the field of public health. Finally, GPH offers several certificates including the fully online Advanced Certificate in Public Health.
In collaboration with departmental faculty, the Chair will serve as the key administrator responsible for assuring the quality and growth of departmental programs, as well as the candidate’s academic spheres. The Chair will demonstrate broad command of the department’s key content and methodological areas, exemplary research and academic achievements, strategic leadership ability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and an entrepreneurial spirit. The Chair will work with faculty and staff to develop and implement the department’s vision; nurture, recruit and develop high-performance faculty; maintain a collaborative and transparent atmosphere; and work with other leaders of GPH to realize the mission of the College.
The Department of Epidemiology includes several centers, labs, and certificate programs, some closely aligned with Biostatistics. The result is a distinctive complex of rigorous epidemiological, statistical and dynamic modeling approaches, including agent-based, spanning chronic, infectious, vector-borne and environmental health challenges, informed by social, behavioral, and biological science.
The successful candidate will be a well-established scholar with an international reputation, a strong record of external funding, and a demonstrated commitment to working with an interdisciplinary and diverse faculty. Finally, and equally important, the individual will possess a demonstrated ability to foster the educational mission of the department.
Doctoral degree in epidemiology (preferred) or related discipline
Strong and established record of scholarly achievement and external research
Administrative experience in a university or other research
Application Instructions – applicants must apply online and submit:
Cover letter addressing candidate’s philosophy and qualifications with regard to the responsibilities of the Chair (including administration, graduate level education, and research) and vision for the field of epidemiology
About NYU GPH
The College of Global Public Health (GPH) has a bold vision - to significantly improve the health of populations by pioneering solutions that advance health equity around the world, today and tomorrow. That vision reflects a core belief that global health is not merely a field of study, area of research, or a career, but a goal that will change the world.
Achieving grand goals requires both seriousness of purpose and willingness to take action, and at NYU, we believe that investing in committed people and essential resources will bring us closer to addressing the global health problems of today and tomorrow.
"NYU caters to the person who is a self-starter. You’re in the middle of New York and everything is happening at once so it can be very competitive, but you have to have the discipline and motivation to go out there and make things happen."
- Megan Feeney, MPH 2016, Public Health and Nutrition Concentration
