Duke Health seeks a Lean Improvement Coach to lead and support the deployment of a Lean Daily Management System. The Coach will work on creating and strengthening the problem solving and continuous improvement mindset at different levels in the organization. In addition to engaging, training, and coaching, they will facilitate the analysis of problems and the execution of measurable improvements. The Coach will facilitate events to set institutional goals, conduct value stream analysis and rapid process improvements, as well as create a lean daily management system to help the organization achieve its goals.
The Coach will primarily utilize Lean methodology. In addition to strong Lean specialized knowledge, the Coach will need to demonstrate strong soft skills to be able to read the environment as well as build trust and collaborative relationships with team members across the organization.
Specific Job Duties
Facilitates the implementation of the organization's continuous improvement and Lean transformation system in alignment with the Duke Health objectives.
Plans for and assesses the impact and sustainability of Lean improvement (e.g. waste reduction, ROI).
Serves as a change facilitator, develops and collaborates with other Lean champions, and influences leadership in the transformation to, and support of, a culture of continuous improvement.
Develops Lean training and coaching content, documents, materials, and courses. Provides training and coaching to all levels of the organization
Conducts and coaches others to conduct value stream analysis, rapid process improvements, daily management events and other Lean activities. Utilizes and coaches others to utilize A3 problem solving methodologies to address identified opportunities.
Supports the creation of documentation for standardized operating procedures and policies for a variety of processes.
Coaches others and facilitates the monitoring and analysis of existing and new processes for improvement opportunities in quality, delivery, and cost.
Supports project management activities and/or works with project managers on project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout.
Performs other related duties, administrative or otherwise, incidental to the work described herein.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience and demonstrated skill with using the teaching method of asking questions for self-discovery
Strong facilitation skills
Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills
Expert knowledge of process improvement techniques as would be gained from certification and use of tools taught in Six Sigma Black Belt, Green Belt, and Lean training or from certification from the National Association for Healthcare Quality (Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ))
Ability to manage multiple projects
Change management skills: stakeholder analysis, communication plans, organizational readiness assessments
Project management skills: create project plans and manage multiple parallel deadlines, ability to identify roadblocks proactively and formulate mitigation plans
Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering or health-related field is required. Six Sigma, Lean, or performance improvement training is required.
Experience: Minimum of 4 years work experience, including 2 years with significant responsibility for performance/process improvement. Experience with facilitation, coaching and leading performance improvement teams required.
Master’s in business, engineering or health-related field (or related technical field) and 2 years of related experience.
Competitive Qualifications: Master's degree strongly preferred. Experience in healthcare. 4+ years of process improvement and lean coaching experience.
