Geisinger is recruiting an experienced and established clinical informaticist to serve as the Chief Research Information Officer. Candidates are expected to have extensive clinical informatics experience and an appropriate advanced degree (MD or equivalent, including PhD candidates with extensive clinical training/certification or equivalent experience). Physician candidates must have Board certification/eligibility for Clinical Informatics. In addition to clinical informatics experience, evidence of independent and collaborative research, as well as teaching experience, are highly desirable. Successful candidates should have an extensive track-record in leadership, which should be demonstrated in their experience managing both personnel and large-scale research informatics/infrastructure projects. They should have a proven track-record of implementing research informatics strategy, in addition to demonstrated scholarly productivity in the form of peer-reviewed scientific publications, and in their history of sustained external research funding. Additionally, candidates should have expertise in informatics governance (including technical, compliance, and ethical considerations involved with data sharing for research purposes), informatics applied to research administration (clinical trials management systems, research data capture tools such as REDCap, cohort identification tools such as i2b2), change management, and informatics education (both informally for the research community and formally for informatics professionals). The CRIO will report directly to the Executive Vice President & Chief Scientific Officer.
Successful candidates should be recognized leaders in the field and are expected to lead novel research and implementation efforts that will transform healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes. Participation and leadership in regional and national research data sharing efforts (e.g., through OHDSI, PCORI, NCATS) is expected. Placed strategically within the healthcare delivery system, Geisinger research activities lead to discoveries that positively impact the lives of our patients, providers, and the community, while improving the value of the care we deliver.
In this role, the CRIO will be expected to leverage Geisinger’s significant data resources, including a mature electronic health record with over 1.75 million patients spanning more than twenty years, and over 3 billion records. The Geisinger research enterprise has mapped much of the data to standard terminologies including RxNorm, LOINC and SNOMED CT. Geisinger also has a two-year ACGME-accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship program. We conduct research in applied clinical informatics, particularly to support our large precision health programs, including the MyCode® Community Health Initiative. MyCode currently has over 210,000 consented participants linked to rich clinical information including a median of 12 years of electronic health record data. At present nearly 93,000 participants have exome sequence, genotype and HLA data available for research, with the goal of at least 250,000 sequenced participants over the next 2-3 years. This represents a significant, and, at present, unique resource for discovery and implementation research, of which applied clinical informatics is a strategic priority. Geisinger is consistently ranked as one of the ‘most wired’ healthcare systems in the United States and is committed to using clinical informatics to re-engineer care delivery across the system. Working closely with other research and clinical leaders throughout the enterprise, the CRIO is expected to play an essential role in realizing Geisinger’s vision for precision health within a learning healthcare system, for which informatics is a foundational component.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
To promote and facilitate research using data and information systems throughout the Geisinger system, including the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (in Scranton, PA) and Geisinger National Precision Health (in the Washington DC area).
Integrate and lead applied informatics disciplines including clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, consumer health informatics, and public health informatics.
Develop strategies, and design, implement, and optimize systems to support the integration of research with patient care to create a state-of-the-art learning healthcare environment.
Participate in Geisinger’s strategic and operational governance processes as representative of the EVP/Chief Scientific Officer at senior management meetings.
Lead research-focused IT strategic and operational planning to achieve business goals by fostering innovation, prioritizing IT initiatives, and coordinating the evaluation, deployment, and management of current and future research IT systems across the organization.
Develop and maintain an appropriate IT organizational structure that supports the needs of research.
Assess and make recommendations on the improvement or re-engineering of the IT organization as they relate to research.
Promote and oversee strategic relationships between internal IT resources and external entities, including government, vendors, and partner organizations.
Approve, prioritize, and control projects and the project portfolio as they relate to the selection, acquisition, development, and installation of research information systems.
Define and communicate plans, policies, and standards for the organization for acquiring, implementing, and operating IT systems.
Ensure compliance to applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT, healthcare, and research informatics.
