Vanderbilt University Medical Center is recruiting for a Director of Quality and Safety for our Central Sterile Processing Department.
Your Department As a leading, nationally recognized academic medical center, our surgeons perform some of the most advanced surgical procedures at the forefront of medical science today. We are seeking an experienced Central Sterile Processing leader who has acted in a director or system manager role for the central sterile processing program at an academic medical center or at a leading surgical institution to head our quality and safety program. VUMC has 56 main campus operating rooms with 11 more at our our surgical centers. The person in this role will consult with other locations including various procedural areas. We process more than 4,000 instrument trays per week, so we are searching for a candidate who has demonstrated experience and competency in leadership in larger scale Central Sterile Processing facilities.
Your Role You will have responsibility for two senior leaders and other staff members, working to improve efficiency, staff development, and overall department quality and safety-based outcomes. You will:
define and implement safety, performance, and efficiency metrics for the department through collaboration with other CSP leaders and the VP of Perioperative Services.
analyze and recommend improvements to the orientation, education, and development of staff members including a focus on successful practice and certification.
ensure regulatory compliance through analysis, establishment of defined metrics and outputs and audits
review and develop a deep understanding of workflow efficiencies and make recommendations for improvements
create a baseline for staff competency and show continued progress toward excellence
Reporting Structure This position will report directly to the VP of Perioperative Services.

Job Summary Leads and maintains safe systems, directed toward achievement of quality patient care outcomes, enhancing patient/family experiences, and reducing organizational risks and costs. Also acts as content expert and a primary quality and safety liaison between the Central Sterile Processing Department (CSP) and the Operating Rooms and Procedural areas and the various clinic departments outside the Operating Rooms, for which CSP provides services.
Addresses and makes decisions including managing workflow, operational discrepancies, process improvement, and assurance of all quality metrics with both OR/Procedural and non-OR customers. This may involve, but is not limited to missing, damaged, or lost surgical instruments and review of all instrument manufacturer's instructions for use (MIFU), tray defects. Also includes decisions dictated by policy and/or procedure and assurance of regulatory compliance.
Serves as content expert for the routing and transportation of dirty/soiled instruments and sterile instruments between the VUH (main) hospital campus and satellite clinics, including items needing special sterile processing at outside locations. This job is responsible for accurate and timely communication with hospital clinics and satellite clinic staff and management.
