University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB) Hospital seeks an inspiring and transformative physician leader who is passionate about quality, safety and high reliability to serve as its Chief Quality Officer (CQO). The health system is anchored by UAB Hospital, its 1,200-bed tertiary hospital and academic health science center. In 2022, the academic center earned national recognition as one of the country's best hospitals with 8 US News & World Report ranked programs including three in the top 20; OB/GYN (#5), Rheumatology (#10) and Rehabilitation (#20). The hospital also earned the distinction as the "Best Hospital," in the state of Alabama. Further, in 2022, UAB Hospital cared for over 135,000 emergency room visits, 53,000 discharges and over 4,000 deliveries. UAB Hospital remains a destination for the region as a level 1 trauma center and magnet designated facility. This gift will further support priority initiatives, recruitment, and retention of national recognized faculty leaders.

Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer of UAB Medicine, and working across a multifaceted teaching hospital, the CQO will be responsible for setting a vision, strategy and organizational structure for quality and safety. This leader will drive performance improvement informed by measured outcomes to fulfill UAB Hospital's mission and obligation to its patients and the region. This leader will work across departments and multidisciplinary programs to develop a platform agile in response to quality and safety events, promoting a proactive and strategic approach to continuous improvement. The CQO will collaborate with department chairs, clinical and administrative leaders across the Organization to spearhead innovative, strategic and effective safety programs across all modalities of care.

The successful candidate will be a physician leader with a proven record of accomplishment in driving quality and safety within a high-performing, complex teaching hospital. The CQO will be a visible, transparent, clinically credible and decisive leader who is able to foster relationships and collaboration across the organization. An MD/DO degree (or equivalent) is required and completion of a postgraduate medical education in an ACGME-accredited residency program with current Board Certification in their specialty.
